defines that affect compilation

_WIN32
	this should be defined for Win32 platforms

DEBUG_MUTEXES
	define this to turn on mutex debugging.  this will log locks/unlocks.

CHECK_MUTEXES (DEBUG_MUTEXES must also be defined)
	checks to make sure mutex operations make sense.  ie, multi_mutex is locked
	when locking multiple mutexes, etc.

THREAD_DEBUG (define to 1-4)
	turns on the thread.log logging
